Childhood in Poland

Gerda Weissmann Klein was born in 1924 in Bielsko, Poland. She was the youngest of three children. Her father was a successful businessman and her mother was a homemaker. Klein had a happy childhood, filled with love and laughter. She was an excellent student and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

The Holocaust

In 1939, Germany invaded Poland and the Holocaust began. Klein's family was forced to live in a ghetto. In 1942, they were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Klein was separated from her parents and siblings. She was forced to work as a slave laborer and witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust firsthand.

Liberation and Freedom

In 1945, Klein was liberated from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She weighed only 68 pounds. She was taken to a hospital in France, where she slowly began to recover from her physical and emotional wounds.

In 1946, Klein met Kurt Klein, a fellow Holocaust survivor. They married and moved to the United States. Klein began to rebuild her life. She earned a degree in social work and became a successful businesswoman. She also became a passionate advocate for Holocaust education.
