In the 1970s and 1980s, Jiu Jitsu continued to grow in popularity in the South Zone, thanks in part to the success of the Gracie family in mixed martial arts (MMA). In 1993, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) was founded, and the first World Jiu-Jitsu Championship was held in Rio de Janeiro. These events helped to further popularize Jiu Jitsu around the world, and the South Zone was no exception.

In 1997, the South Zone Jiu-Jitsu Association (SZJJA) was founded by Professor Ricardo Liborio. The SZJJA was created to promote and develop Jiu Jitsu in the South Zone, and it quickly became one of the most respected Jiu Jitsu organizations in the region. The SZJJA has hosted numerous tournaments and events over the years, and it has helped to produce some of the top Jiu Jitsu athletes in the world.
