History of VSIs

The VSI series was founded in 1995 by Nicholas Barr, then-Director of the Institute of Economics and Statistics at the University of Oxford. Barr was inspired by the success of the Very Short s to Modern Economics series, which had been published by Oxford University Press since the 1970s. He believed that there was a need for a similar series of books that would introduce readers to a wide range of other subjects, from history and philosophy to science and literature.

The first VSI, The History of the Universe by John Gribbin, was published in 1996. The series quickly became a success, and today there are over 600 VSIs in print, covering a wide range of subjects.

Format and Style

VSIs are typically between 100 and 150 pages long and are written in a clear and concise style. They are designed to be accessible to general readers, regardless of their prior knowledge of the subject. VSIs typically include:

  • A brief to the subject
  • A discussion of the key concepts and theories
  • A guide to further reading

Audience

VSIs are written for a wide range of readers, including:

  • Students
  • General readers
  • Anyone who wants to learn more about a new topic

Benefits of Reading VSIs

There are many benefits to reading VSIs, including:

  • They are a great way to learn about a new subject.

Very Short s are a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about a new subject. They are well-written, informative, and affordable. If you are looking for a way to expand your knowledge, I encourage you to check out the VSI series.
