To Catch a Raven by Beverly Jenkins is a historical romance novel set in the Civil War era. The novel tells the story of Raven Moreau, a free woman of color, and Captain Riley Sinclair, a white Union Army officer. Despite their different backgrounds, Raven and Riley find themselves drawn to each other. However, their love is forbidden, and they must overcome many obstacles in order to be together.

Jenkins does an excellent job of creating a vivid and realistic setting for her novel. The novel is set in New Orleans, and Jenkins brings the city to life with her descriptions of the bustling streets, the vibrant music, and the diverse population. The novel also does a good job of depicting the social and political climate of the Civil War era. Jenkins shows the racism and prejudice that was rampant at the time, and she also shows the ways in which the war affected the lives of both black and white Americans.

The characters in To Catch a Raven are well-developed and complex. Raven is a strong and independent woman, but she is also vulnerable and lonely. Riley is a brave and honorable man, but he is also flawed and has his own prejudices. The relationship between Raven and Riley is believable and heartwarming, and Jenkins does a good job of showing the challenges that they face as they try to overcome the obstacles that stand in their way.

Overall, To Catch a Raven is a well-written and engaging historical romance novel. Jenkins does an excellent job of creating a vivid and realistic setting, and her characters are well-developed and complex. The novel is also a good depiction of the social and political climate of the Civil War era. I highly recommend To Catch a Raven to fans of historical romance novels and to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Civil War era.

Here are some of the things I liked about the novel:

  • The vivid and realistic setting.
  • The well-developed and complex characters.
  • The believable and heartwarming relationship between Raven and Riley.
  • The good depiction of the social and political climate of the Civil War era.

Here are some of the things I didn't like about the novel:

  • The novel is a bit slow-paced at times.
  • The ending is a bit too neat and tidy.

Overall, I enjoyed To Catch a Raven and I would recommend it to fans of historical romance novels.
