Early Life and Leadership

Chief Standing Bear was born in the early 1830s in what is now Nebraska. He was a member of the Ponca tribe, and his father was a chief. Standing Bear became a chief himself in the 1860s, and he quickly became known for his wisdom and leadership.

In 1876, the United States government forced the Ponca tribe to leave their land in Nebraska and move to a reservation in Oklahoma. Standing Bear and his people were devastated by this forced removal, and they began a long journey back to their homeland.

The Journey to Washington, D.C.

Standing Bear's efforts led to the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1887. This act granted United States citizenship to all Native Americans born in the United States.
