Early Life and Training

John Frederick Kensett was born on March 22, 1816, in Cheshire, Connecticut. He showed an early interest in art and began studying painting at the age of 13. In 1838, he moved to New York City to continue his studies at the National Academy of Design. Kensett also traveled to Europe in 1840 and 1845, where he studied the work of the Old Masters and was influenced by the Barbizon School of landscape painting.

Hudson River School

Kensett was a member of the Hudson River School, a group of American landscape painters who were active in the mid-19th century. The Hudson River School artists were inspired by the beauty of the American wilderness and sought to capture its majesty and grandeur in their paintings.

Luminism

Kensett is best known for his Luminist paintings, which emphasize the play of light and shadow in landscape painting.
